The Code We Live By

The Code of the West

"A cowboy's word is his sacred bond — a bargain sealed with a handshake is more binding than any legal document."

Be loyal to your brand and your outfit.
Be thankful for your work and give it everything.
Be proud of your occupation. Wear it with honor.
Be cheerful. Great quick assistance to friends and strangers in need.
Endure hardship without complaining. Don't make excuses.
Always try to be better than the other fella — through honest effort.
Share what you own with a fellow worker.
Demand square dealings. Never tolerate cowardice.
Be generous with your life and your means.
Treat women like ladies, always.
If it is not yours, don't take it.
If it is not true, don't say it. If it is not right, don't do it.
Never sell your saddle.
Do your best — in all things, at all times.
A Place Like No Other

Our Heritage

About Fox Creek Ranch

"Join us to visit the old West — still breathing, still working, still alive."

A Living Legacy

Fox Creek Ranch sits on three thousand acres of pristine rangeland near the small community of Paicinas in San Benito County, where the hills roll wide, and big sky goes on forever. This is one of many cattle ranches in California, and it has been doing what it does — raising Angus and Longhorn cattle, working horses, and cowboys — for many years.

What makes Fox Creek extraordinary is not just its rich history but its deliberate commitment to authenticity. In an era when most ranching has turned to all-terrain vehicles for gathering or using the more durable pipe corals, Fox Creek Ranch has chosen a different path. Our working cowboys ride out on horseback to manage the herd or ride fence-line, the same way their predecessors did in the 1880s — with skill, horsemanship, and an intimate knowledge of the land and the animals in their care.

The Land & The Animals

The ranch is home to a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle — true Butler Longhorns — those magnificent, distinctive animals that once defined the American West. Watching them graze across the open range against the backdrop of San Benito County's golden hills is like stepping through a photograph from another era. The ranch also maintains a full complement of working ranch horses, each one trained and ridden frequently as a true working partner.

The corrals, fencing, and ranch structures are built in the old style — all wood, handcrafted, weathered, and strong. Everything speaks of the era when hands-on hard work shaped the construction style, and that is entirely intentional.

San Benito County — The Last True Ranch Country

San Benito County is one of the very last corners of California where genuine ranch culture survives intact. Here, working cowboys still move cattle on horseback. No drones, no ATVs, no shortcuts. This is a place that demands skill, patience, and real commitment to the craft of ranching — and Fox Creek Ranch retains authentic expression.

Our Facilities

The ranch headquarters are positioned well apart from the event areas, maintaining the working integrity of the operation. Separate from the day-to-day ranching, Fox Creek offers some of the most unique event venues in the state: a fully authentic Western Town with over seven individual buildings, a complete rodeo arena complex with branding, rodeo, and cutting facilities, the evocative Indian Camp with its three fourteen-foot teepees, and a private airstrip and hangar for backcountry aviation.

Every structure on this ranch was built to last and built to tell the truth about where it came from. When you visit Fox Creek Ranch, you are visiting the real thing.

The Code We Ride By

Respect. Integrity. Hard Work.

At Fox Creek Ranch, the Code of the West is not a slogan on the wall. It is the operating principle of everything we do. We value honest work, fair dealing, loyalty, and genuine respect — for the animals, the land, our guests, and each other. These are values that were forged on ranches like ours more than 140 years ago, and they are as relevant today as they ever were.

When you shake hands at Fox Creek Ranch, that handshake means something.

The Western Town

Step off the main ranch road, and you step back in time. Fox Creek Ranch's Western Town is a full-scale, realistic 1880s Main Street, built from weathered timber and corrugated iron, set against the sweeping golden hills of San Benito County. Every building is authentic in style and construction — we harvested many over 100 year old barns and used the wood as the exterior of the town's buildings.

The Western Town includes the following individual buildings that are all available during events:

Church Mess Hall Saloon Undertaker Fox Creek Bank Grand Hotel (Event Center) Fox Creek Trading Sheriff's Office Restroom Facilities Jail Blacksmith

The Western Town includes restroom facilities and is available for a large-scale event, such as weddings, corporate events, film shoots, and private gatherings. The central plaza, with its bronze cowboy sculpture and string lighting, creates an unforgettable atmosphere after dark.

Rodeo & Arena Facilities

Fox Creek Ranch also includes a full rodeo facility — one of the most authentic and well-equipped private rodeo arenas. The arena complex includes three distinct working arenas:

  • Branding Arena — traditional cattle branding facility with authentic working corrals, all constructed of wood, the old ranch style.
  • Rodeo Arena — full-size competition arena suitable for roping, barrel racing, sorting, and all traditional rodeo events.
  • Cutting Arena — dedicated cutting horse facility for competitions, clinics, and training events.

The arena complex has hosted numerous public rodeos, private competitions, and equestrian events over the years. With the authentic wooden corrals and modest grandstands, it provides a setting that transports competitors and spectators alike to another era.

Indian Camp

Located in a secluded area of the ranch, well away from the Western Town and arena complex, Indian Camp is home to three magnificent fourteen-foot authentic teepees erected within a private fenced enclosure. This evocative space is available for photography, tours, and as a backdrop for special events. The teepees are not available as overnight accommodations, but create an extraordinary visual setting unlike anything else in the region.
